The Association was founded in 1923 as a Texas state organization.  Owners of independent retail furniture stores found a gathering place.  Member services were developed to meet their specific needs.  The “litmus test" for services was and continues to be, "What needs to be done that members can't better do for themselves?"  Membership has now expanded to include any company involved in furnishing the home, anywhere in the country, in any segment of the industry.

Permanent offices for the Association were established in downtown Dallas in 1925.  HFIA has not moved too far away from its roots and now offices in the World Trade Center on the Dallas Market Center campus.  Members and prospective members have a standing invitation to visit the offices in Dallas or look for HFIA at many industry events throughout the year.

Membership has value and members are valued by Home Furnishings Independents Association.
